when things are our "normal" we're not aware of their consequences --- usually negative -- on other people ... for a thief, to steal is his normal or becomes his normal, and he sees everyone near him as a thief and so his constantly vigilant of his possessions ... it is so with those who are narcissistic ... their self-centeredness is their normal--they do not understand how their needy, egotistical and dysfunctional behavior affects those around them--but more so those that love them ... it is so hard for people to unlearn behaviors--it requires deep self knowledge and understanding, the realization and acceptance that something needs to be changed and, perhaps most importantly, the desire and commitment to change.
