The first time I saw the painting "The Persistence of Memory" (beyond its value as a work of art) I saw it as a clever way to capture an intangible ... how does one represent memory on a flat surface? Impossible ... but so Dali seems to have ... the dissolution on time of the melting clocks, the far away without a horizon line, everything in the distance fuzzy ...
How would one, I wonder, represent the persistence of a feeling on a flat surface? The nuances of reactions, the workings of the body--anticipation, anxiety, longing, joy, lust, love, desire, etc ... all fused into one thing that keeps you awake at night or pops up randomly like a jack-in-the-box clown ... I imagine it would be a set of juxtaposed hues, a blending of images and reflections drafted against the echo of a thought ... a release of energies that take days to build up and whose climax only magnifies our yearnings ... what would be the set of colors and words?
The flesh of time removed to expose it all ... crimson purple blue black hues on yellow reds ...
