scent and such
the brain plays with us, it really does! ... buying bananas it hit me--the aroma of guavas ... small, pinkish yellow green guavas in a wicker basket sending off their scent to captivate ... and just like that I was transported to places I didn't know I remembered ... another life all too forgotten came rushing to the forefront of my thoughts and my eyes watered ... and I found myself laughing and telling the dumfounded girl behind the register how in the house of my childhood I would climb guava trees ... I did so not just to pick the ripest, sweetest ones ... but more so to be encapsulated in their scent ... the heavy summer air literally thick from the moisture that came from the beaches and the river nearby gave a stillness to the air that I have never felt again; and within that stillness the waves of ripe guava that trampled my senses and I climbed higher hoping to leave the ground behind.
as with ripe guavas, the only fruit that will trigger such memories (you may read Marquez' El Olor de la Guayaba to understand why -- I am not so eloquent), there are few other scents that my brain guards zealously ...
