Dark Personality: the Dark Triad
Romance and dimly-lit settings are so closely associated in our minds that we might automatically think a date will go better in the dark. If it weren’t for the belief that love requires darkness to bloom, modern-day candlemakers could go out of business. As it turns out, however, there are some people who are particularly likely to benefit from night’s shadows. Those individuals, with some of the so-called “dark triad” personality traits, may in fact have better luck finding a partner when the lights are in turned down.
The dark triad in psychology refers to the combination of Machiavellianism (the tendency to coldly manipulate people), psychopathy (the lack of empathy and remorse) and narcissism (excessive self-focus). People high in all three of these qualities can be dangerous partners. As you might imagine, not only do they use people but they are exceptionally good at getting others to swallow their bait. For your own mental health, you'll likely want to stay away from potential partners with dark triad traits, but may also find it difficult to resist their superficial charm and appeal.
I personally know people who can't resist the temptation ... they fall for the apparent charm and caring personality of their vitimizer despute the fact that he proves himself to be an asshole time and again... it's either very low self esteem or the victim secretely hopes their abuser will one day change ... they often cling to a good trait in their victimizer or to a common interest ... and years will go by where the dark personality controls his victim and manipulates them into creating situations that prove their dark theories, particularly about people who pose a threat to their control ... but as in everything, it always takes two for dysfuntion to flourish
