i dreamed a funeral
i dreamed a funeral--the mocking faces of mourners to and fro
gesticulating the grief of the dispassionate--
their sounds echoing a cacophony of pretense
false emotion in an empty symphony of solitude
a cadaver dragged by a stream of words
floated before me, his eyes reflecting a clear sky,
a gaze that struggled to speak
from behind the walls of his prison of thoughts
mourners shrouded in a garb of hunger
danced around ejecting words with no meaning
their dance the joyous darkness of deceit
stained the air with the smug flavor of indifference
only the corpse shed tears from his distant perch
too late to leave a dance that broke his spirit
too late to enjoy the gift that was bestowed upon him
too late to see beyond the trappings of his comfort.
