too easy

in retrospect, it was all too easy, too clean
just the bare minimum of useless words
the customary posturing, the defensive stance
it was more like children pretending to be grownups

the core that burned quickly covered
replaced by the faint vestigial thorns
quickly building up the well learned walls
the silent defense mechanisms promptly erected

it was all too easy, too clean--the impetuousness
of arrogance at work; or just the emotion the triggered
all the flags to be raised
the self-righteousness of loneliness at work.
