The Birth Of A Thought

Hi G***. The Minor Arcana represents your choices and actions throughout the realization of your destiny… The Swords usually indicates a struggle or conflict, a possible decision about separating from your past attachments. There is a desire to find the truth that will shed light on your situation so you can act on it and find closure…

The Story About Athena

In Mythic Tarot, you meet Athena (the goddess of wisdom and justice). She was the daughter of Zeus (the god of the sky, weather patterns, and unexpected thunder bolts) and her mother was Metis (the goddess of wisdom). In some legends, Metis was Zeus’s first wife, but in other legends she was another one of Zeus’s cheating escapades. Athena was born with the traits of both of her parents.

In legend and prophesy, it was said that Metis would bear children that were more powerful than Zeus. Zeus freaked out when he heard about his prophesy and did not want to pay the consequences of being overthrown. In one legend, it was said that Metis was turned into a fly, and Zeus swallowed the fly to put an end to his prophesy. After Zeus swallowed the fly (Metis), he suffered a horrible headache, and soon after, his head split open, and Athena was born, fully grown, and armed, ready to go into war!

Athena did not come from a sexual encounter with Zeus, but rather from Zeus’s thought of wisdom to escape his prophesy. Although Zeus thought he could change his destiny by swallowing the problem, he found out differently. The fly was fertile and represented the seed of wisdom that came from Metis, the fertile egg that would create Athena (the goddess of wisdom and justice).

Athena is wearing a silver crown, a metaphor for the “Great Horned Owl.” The great horned owl is the most intimidating of all the owls because it can take down their predators that are larger than them. Her silver crown also represents that she is a warrior, with a title of high degree. Her sword looks mighty, and it’s as long as she is in tall. The sword is double-edged and represents a spiritual message of thought, and that she will cut through both sides of a situation.

A sudden winter storm is brewing in the distance, indicating a struggle or conflict, a possible decision that needs to be made. The ice-capped mountains represent that Athena has a cold side to her personality because she cuts through the situation, making the right decision. Athena makes her choices based on her ethical assessments, not her emotional assessments, which may seem cold to others. She stands on small pebbles and they represent that she is grounded to her beliefs, and her white gown represents that she is pure and honest with the decisions she makes.

The Energies Of The Swords: The Swords indicate a struggle or conflict, a possible decision about separating from your past attachments. There is a desire to find truth that will shed light on your situation so you’ll act on it. The Swords represent your thoughts, which will cut into and sort through your situation.

The Swords positive characteristics are their strength, authority, courage, ambition and desire to travel, or separate from their attachments. The Sword Archetypes desire to seek the truth and are not afraid to call a “spade a spade”! They experience conflict, pain, anger and aggression. The exact timing of the Swords is undetermined in my deck because the Sword Archetype wrestles with making a big decision, or has unresolved issues that still linger. However, when the Sword is ready to act, it’s rather fast, like an unpredictable storm that comes out of nowhere…

The Swords are good at solving a puzzle or dilemma because they think creatively and examine situations from all angles. They are optimistic, curious and alert, but can be cold, detached and unsympathetic. They possess the virtues of knowledge, good communication, and mental agility. This group of the Tarot is original, accurate, well-disciplined, and quick-thinking, more rational and intellectual than emotional.

Swords have a tendency to judge themselves and others harshly because they have high standards and a tendency to carry a grudge and express their opinion. They are known to change their temperament as rapidly as the wind changes and will not hesitate to express their anger verbally. Their decisions are not swayed by others. Though they’ll take a step back and come to terms with their issues, it will take time. Their decisions cannot be rushed.

My Interpretation Of The Ace Of Swords: The Ace of Swords represents bravery and further suggests that you’ll take a leap into something as long as it is in your best interests. The Ace of Swords also rules your ability to be assertive, honest, of precise judgment, and not easily swayed by others. The Sword will cut through the gray areas to find truth and clarity in any situation to make the right decision.

I also call the Ace’s the controlling cards of the Tarot. The “Ace of Swords” indicates the seed of thought that is growing in your mind about the looming choices or a decision that you need to make that will send you on a new beginning and new direction.

The Reverse Meaning Of The Ace Of Swords: When the “Ace of Swords” is reversed, a detrimental, troubling situation is about to arise suddenly. You’ll find it difficult to agree with others, and your temperament may change. You’ll find yourself verbally argumentative or quarrelsome. If the Ace of Swords comes out in the reversed position, you may learn that you’re being lied to. The surrounding cards will determine the depth of the dishonesty and deceit.
